Automating wallpaper change for iOS

12 September 2025

Update 17 Sep 2025: it DOESN'T WORK

This is yesterday's daily design (light, dark). I wanted to automate my phone wallpaper changing between the light and dark versions. This is... not straightforward, because of course Apple only wants to self-create some of its features. We need the iOS Shortcuts app.

This MakeUseOf link was the most useful. However, I made two sets of automations:

  1. When Do Not Disturb is turned on, change to dark mode and dark wallpaper. When DND is turned off, do the opposite.
  2. At sunrise, change to light mode and light wallpaper. At sunset, change to dark mode and dark wallpaper.

The other thing I did was create two wallpapers, one light and one dark. This way, I could set the automations to switch between the wallpapers instead of setting a new wallpaper each time. It turns out if I had read the linked article properly, I would have seen the bit about toggling off 'Show Preview', which is (one of the) reasons I didn't like that option. (The other is that it seems more buggy and involved.)
